Mikkelsen back in Corsica

Mikkelsen back in Corsica

Andreas Mikkelsen’s long-term WRC future remains up in the air despite confirmation of a second appearance with Skoda Motorsport at next month’s Che Guevara Energy Drink Tour de Corse (6 – 9 April).

The Norwegian, who found himself out of a drive following Volkswagen Motorsport’s decision to leave the championship, will drive a Skoda Fabia R5 in WRC 2 at the season’s first asphalt encounter.

It will be his second outing with the Czech team. He dominated WRC 2 at January’s season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo to win by almost 3min 30sec and finish seventh overall.

Mikkelsen’s plans for the rest of the year remain fluid as he strives to put himself in pole position for a works drive in the headline World Rally Car category in 2018.

“There’s still nothing decided for the future, or the rest of the season or next year,” he told wrc.com. “This season will be more of a rally-by-rally season. But to make sure we are in the business, we will be doing the recce on every event on the calendar.”

Mikkelsen has plenty of Corsica experience. He has tackled the Mediterranean island event six times, finishing third in the last two seasons in a Volkswagen Polo R.

“I’m very happy and very grateful that Skoda asked me again if I could do an event for them. Corsica is a rally I enjoy and I do believe we can get a good result there. I’m also looking forward to drive again, I need all the time in a rally car that I can get,” he said.

Mikkelsen admitted his situation remains hard to accept.

“To follow from the sidelines in Sweden last month was a very strange feeling. I’m so happy to be competing again. Of course, I would prefer to be in a World Rally Car but as that is not an option, this is a perfect chance,” he added.
