The Paulick Report is pleased to bring back a popular photo/video feature that will run every other week and will spotlight stallions standing in Kentucky.
The series, put together by our friends at EquiSport Photos, will feature stallions that are either just entering stud in 2017, or stallions that have not yet had their first crop reach the racetrack.
This week's spotlight stallion is California Chrome, a 6-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit that is standing his first season in 2017 at Taylor Made Farm.
California Chrome became a fan favorite as a 2-year-old, not just because of his flashy good looks and humble background, but also because of his talent and toughness. ‘Chrome' made his first career start in April of his juvenile season, and went on to race seven times, winning three races, including two stakes victories.
California Chrome continued to improve as a 3-year-old, winning five straight stakes races to kick off the year – including the G1 Kentucky Derby, G1 Preakness, and G1 Santa Anita Derby. Those victories, in addition to winning the G1 Hollywood Derby on the turf, and a third-place finish in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic, earned California Chrome his first Horse of the Year title in 2014.
After a disappointing 4-year-old year which saw him make just two starts due to various minor setbacks, Chrome returned to the racetrack as a 5-year-old, and he proved to be one of the top horses in the world. California Chrome went on a six-race winning streak to start the year, earning victories in the G1 Dubai World Cup, G1 Pacific Classic, and G1 Awesome Again, just to name a few. His only defeat came in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic, where he finished second by a half-length to Arrogate. California Chrome earned his second Horse of the Year title in 2016, in addition to being named Champion Older Horse.
California Chrome made one start this season, in the inaugural G1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park. Unfortunately, it just wasn't Chrome's day, and he was unable to add the Pegasus World Cup to his already impressive resume.
California Chrome retired to stud with a record of 16 wins in 27 starts, with earnings of $14,752,650. We hope you enjoy our new feature, and we would once again like to thank our friends at EquiSport Photos for the great video.
